Shabtai Petrushka — originally Siegmund Leo Petruschka-Friedmann (1903–1997) — was born into a Jewish family that just a few years previously had moved to the German Reich from Galicia. In 1922 he moved to Berlin to study mechanical engineering in Charlottenburg. In order to support himself, he played in the jazz band Sid Kay’s Fellows. Through teachers at the Stern Conservatory, he received instruction in the trumpet and the double bass. In 1928, he passed his exams and became a professional musician. After 1933, he could only perform within the Jewish Cultural League. In 1938 he and his family managed to emigrate to Palestine, where he continued to work as a musician.
