The writer Else Lasker-Schüler (1869–1945) came to Berlin in 1894. From 1924 she resided at the Hotel Koschel, in a small room facing the courtyard. After she was attacked by stormtroopers in early 1933, she fled to Zurich. However, in Switzerland she received only a temporary residence permit and was not allowed to work. In 1934 and 1937 she traveled to Palestine. During her third visit there in 1939, the outbreak of war prevented her from returning to Switzerland. Else Lasker-Schüler died in Jerusalem was buried on the Mount of Olives.
