The S. Fischer Publishing House is familiar to many readers. Its founder, Samuel Fischer (1859–1934) resided with his family in this private house from 1905. On the side façade of the still-extant house, one can recognize the logo of the publishing company. Many famous authors, such as Thomas Mann (1875–1955), Walther Rathenau (1867–1922) and Gerhart Hauptmann (1862–1946) passed through these doors. In 1933 Samuel Fischer opted not to emigrate and died the following year. His son-in-law, Gottfried Berman-Fischer (1897–1995), who had been managing the company since 1928, continued to run the business in exile.
