The philosopher Ernst Bloch (1885–1977) lived here from 1931 to 1933. As an opponent of the Nazi regime, a Jew and a committed Communist, Bloch emigrated to Switzerland with his partner, later his wife, Karola Piotrkowska in February 1933. After a brief stay in Italy, the two fled to Prague and, in 1939, on to the US. From 1948 till 1961 the couple lived in East Berlin, thereafter in Tübingen. Bloch’s works as a Marxist philosopher have been translated into more than 30 languages.
